This week we cross the galaxy to get you your FCB fix; Denis Villenueve’s Arrival and Galaxy White IPA from Anchorage Brewing gave us plenty to tackle. The film is something of a surprise hit. The idea that a well-made, thought provoking film with a universal message of understanding found its audience shouldn’t surprise anyone but hey, there’s an explosion in there too.

BREWERY: Anchorage Brewing

BEER: Galaxy White IPA

Style: White (Belgian) IPA

ABV: 7%

IBU: 50

The Belgian wheat IPA is an emerging style in the craft beer world and folks at Anchorage Brewing have taken it another step toward the edge with Galaxy White IPA. By bottle conditioning with the brettanomyces, (the strain of yeast which brewmaster Gabe Fletcher calls “King”) Fletcher adds a touch of funk and makes it “age able”. A rare trait among IPAs’ and a welcome wrinkle to those of us who love to curate our own beer cellars.

FILM: Arrival

DIRECTOR – Denis Villeneuve

STUDIO – Paramount Pictures

BUDGET – $47 Million

IMDB

Arrival is a heady sci-fi thriller more in the vein of 2001 than Independence Day. Intellect and atmosphere are two elements we have come to expect from Villenueve, who helmed 2013’s Prisoners, and that unmistakable style is truly working in perfect concert here. Arrival beautifully mixes richly thematic storytelling, deep symbolism and real world pragmatics in such a way that the film (much like the alien language it depicts) speaks to you on all levels simultaneously. Arrival is a truly rewarding watch
