Our Sacrifice Harry Potter

Thanks to Snape’s loving memory, Harry Potter now knows that he himself is a Horcrux (an item cursed to house a part of Voldemort’s soul so he can have eternal life). Therefore, if he wants to stop Voldemort, he has to die. It’s a harrowing thought, but Harry is quick to comply (thanks to his faith in Dumbledore). Hermione and Ron offer to accompany him, but Harry asks them to stay behind and kill the snake Nagini (another Horcrux) so that there will be no more Horcruxes left. That way, there’s only Voldemort himself, as mortally vulnerable as ever.

But Harry isn’t just dying to stop Voldemort; he’s dying to save his friends and family and everyone at Hogwarts and ultimately everyone in the world. He is their propitiation and sacrfice, like a lamb to the slaughter. Just like Jesus, who was led likewise to the cross – not only for his “offenses” against the Jewish Law as perceived by the Law-keepers and authorities of that time but for the offenses of God’s own people against God and ultimately for the sins of the world. God give us the strength to say and live “Amen” to that.

Dumbledore Loves Good Words

Speaking of Harry’s unfaltering faith in Dumbledore, we also have this brief little scene at the ethereal location of metaphysical King’s Cross (how fitting). Dumbledore discloses everything to Harry and then he encourages Harry to go on. Although he could choose to stay with Dumbledore, he knows he has to get back into the fight and stop Voldemort. Thankfully, Dumbledore once again has the right words to encourage Harry and awaken within him the bravery to move on. That’s how we as Christians are to speak: not letting any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only that which is good for building up and edifying and encourage others to put into effect God’s will on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Key Texts

  1. Galatians 4:4-5 NRSV

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

  2. Ephesians 4:29 ESV

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
