Kubo and the Full Armor of God

Kubo, Beetle, and Monkey are on a mission. They have to defeat the evil Moon King, but they need some enchanted armor to do it. Kubo needs to find the Sword Unbreakable, the Breastplate Impenetrable, and the Helmet Invulnerable. These three legendary weapons are Kubo’s only chance to conquer the Moon King, and they are the villagers only hope of salvation.

Though it would be easy to correlate each piece of enchanted armor with each piece of the armor of God, such is beyond our scope. Our focus, instead, is on the journey obtaining the armor. Kubo sought justice and peace in the same way we as Christians should seek after God’s kingdom – a world of truth and love. And in that seeking, as Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, we will be equipped accordingly.

It Takes a Village to Heal a Moon King

As it turns out, however, the villainous Moon King is Kubo’s grandfather. Once Kubo uses the enchanted armor to defeat him, he is not destroyed but instead rescinds into his original form: a meek and lowly old man. Furthermore, he can’t even remember his wrongdoing. He can’t remember stealing Kubo’s eye, killing Kubo’s parents (twice), and destroying Kubo’s village. He can’t remember any of that, but Kubo and the surviving villagers do.

But instead of punishing the now dethroned Moon King for his crimes, they exhibit a perfect grace and withhold their judgment. They give him a new heart, a new identity, and a new story. And so it takes the entire village to heal the Moon King. This is exactly what the church is supposed to do whenever we are blessed with the opportunity to heal newcomers. We are to remember their sins and transgressions no more and then give them a new heart, a new identity, and a new story.

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.
