  • Nintendo will develop new consoles for emerging markets | The Verge
Nintendo has said it will release new consoles targeted at emerging markets, marking a strategy shift for the Japanese gaming giant. The products will be built from the ground up to serve these markets, rather than repurposing existing hardware. Today, a day after releasing poor annual financial results, the Japanese firm has confirmed that its first app will launch before the end of the year. The app will work with its Mario Kart 8 title, but it won’t be a game per se. Instead, Nintendo says it will be an app that allows users to watch video and peruse data and statistics from their gaming. There is also a Web-based component to the app, tentatively named Mario Kart TV, which allows the same game footage and stats to be watched online. All of this news has emerged in what has been a difficult 24 hours for Nintendo as they reported significant losses in the quarterly earnings and are currently embroiled in a controversy over same-sex equality rights, related to their new life-sim Tomodachi Life.
