  • Amazon Angles to Attract Hachette's Authors to Its Side - NYTimes.com
The confrontation between Amazon and Hachette is growing louder and meaner, as the combatants drop all pretense that this is a reasonable dispute among reasonable people.
  • Uber agrees to new national policy that will limit surge pricing during emergencies | The Verge
Uber is well known for using a dynamic model it calls surge pricing that adjusts the cost of a fare based on supply and demand. The company's CEO, Travis Kalanick, has defended this practice, saying it puts more cars on the road, despite public outcry from customers, media, and politicians. But the company drew particular heat when surge pricing kicked in during extreme weather in New York City, specifically during Hurricane Sandy and a recent snowstorm. At the time the NY attorney general Eric Schneiderman released a statement implying that Uber's surge pricing during these periods could constitute price gouging.
  • Apple Maps Engineer Moving to Uber - The Information
Uber has poached Chris Blumenberg, a senior engineering manager who worked on Apple Maps, according to three people familiar with the move. Blumenberg was one of the first engineers to work on the iPhone software and was a senior leader on Apple’s iOS team.
  • Apple Hires Two Former Nike FuelBand Engineers, Possibly for iWatch Team - Mac Rumors
Earlier this year, Nike significantly downsized its FuelBand team, firing several members of the 80-person team that worked to create its well-known fitness tracker as part of a shift from hardware to software. Apple snapped up two of the former FuelBand team members in June, Ryan Bailey and Jon Gale. As noted by 9to5Mac, Bailey, who served as a Senior Test and Validation Engineer at Nike is now listed as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Apple, while Gale, who was a Senior Firmware Engineer at Nike is now employed as a Sensing Systems Engineer at Apple.
  • Harry Potter returns as an adult in new story from J.K. Rowling | Polygon
The 1,500-word story is written from the perspective of Rita Skeeter, the catty Daily Prophet gossip columnist introduced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Skeeter, covering the Quidditch World Cup, focuses on "a certain gang of infamous wizards" — Harry himself, on the verge of turning 34, along with Ron Weasley ("whose famous ginger hair appears to be thinning slightly"), Hermione Granger ("always the femme fatale of the group") and other members of Dumbledore's Army.
