Psalm 112:1-10
In this world there are people with all kinds of fears. The psychiatrists call them phobias. There are people who are afraid of heights, that’s acrophobia; people who are afraid of closed-in places, claustrophobia; people who are afraid of water or afraid of dogs; or well, even afraid of other people, all kinds of fears in today’s world.
Well, there is a fear that drives out fear. There is one fear that makes every other fear disappear. That’s Psalm 112 verse 1, “Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man who feareth the LORD, who delighteth greatly in His commandments.”
As you read Psalm 112, you discover that there are all kinds of fears that are taken care of if you fear the Lord. For example, family fears, verse 2, “His seed [that means his descendants] shall be mighty upon the earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.” Fear the Lord, commit your children to Him and you don’t have to worry. Financial fears, verse 3, “Wealth and riches shall be in his house:” Doesn’t mean we’re all going to be millionaires; it means we’ll always have what we need. If we fear the Lord that takes care of our financial fears.
How about fear of the dark? Verse 4, “Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness:” Some people are afraid of the dark. And God says, “Don’t be afraid of the dark. You fear Me; I’ll take care of all these things. You’ll always have light when you need it. You’ll have My guidance and My direction.”
How about fear of change? Verse 6, “Surely he shall not be moved forever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.” Some people are afraid of the future, afraid of change. God says, “Don’t be afraid of the changes that are going on around you or in you. I Am the God of the universe. You fear Me; I’ll take care of the change.”
Some people are afraid of bad news. Verse 7, “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.” No news is bad news if you’re walking in the will of God. “His heart is fixed.” Psalm 112 tells us there’s only one fear, that’s the fear of the Lord. When we fear the Lord, every other fear is conquered. Let’s walk today in the fear of the Lord, trusting Him with our future.
