Meet Douglas Lim – Mediapreneur

Douglas Lim is a speaker, entrepreneur and digital marketer who has built one of Australia's fastest growing companies, as given by BRW in the last 2 years. His company, a digital agency, has serviced over a thousand clients helping them generate leads, conversions and brand awareness. Douglas has been featured on websites such as ProBlogger and Paper.li and is now helping people navigate the digital marketing landscape at his website http://www.douglaslimdigital.com Douglas also has a hit YouTube channel which has garnered over 250,000 views. His mission is to help double the sales of 2,000 businesses in the next 2 years.

00:46 – Meet Douglas Lim, a “Mediapreneur” who started a digital marketing agency from the ground up and soon grew to be one of the fastest-growing companies in Australia. His company was awarded the BRW Fast Starters Award and BRW Fast 100 Award. Douglas Lim now runs an online business that creates digital marketing campaigns for clients. He also packages that knowledge into online courses, helping people navigate the digital marketing landscape

02:34 – The most exciting thing right now in Doug’s business is the level of automation behind his business. He believes that to have a successful business, you need to at least have an understanding of marketing. His company helps people who feel lost in that area gain a more stable, more noticeable online presence

05:08 – Doug’s story – how someone who came from a non-entrepreneurial background learns how to start and grow a business. His parents raised him with the employee mindset – trade time for money, study hard, land a good-paying job. Since he was young, he dreamed of climbing the corporate ladder. When he landed a job at a global company and made it to Team Leader, that’s when he started noticing things were off. His workload was increased, he was covering for people who weren’t pulling their weight, and his pay raise didn’t cover the cost of inflation. That’s when he started asking himself “how does this work?”

08:24 – Doug’s turning point came when he was knocked back from his pay raise. He was tired and exhausted from working long hours at the office, and he wasn’t even getting rewarded for it. Realization came in the form of a book; “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. Despite his circumstances, Douglas decided to turn his life around. His big takeaway is that you can still do your full-time job while steadily growing your business on the side, and then make it big enough so you can leave your job

12:37 – As a mediapreneur, what are some tips Doug can share with the listeners regarding the power of online marketing, making money online, and getting freedom online? He has several:
Focus on building a tribe of people
Be very clear on your messaging, what you stand for
Niche down, be specific
Build your email list
Offer them something of value in exchange for their email address
Build a relationship with the people on your email list

16:26 – Christ asks Doug how he treads the fine line between giving away enough freebies to build a relationship and still getting people to buy his products. Douglas personally thinks you’re doing your clients a disservice if you keep giving, giving, giving, but there’s no selling involved. Once you transition them from breeders to buyers, they’ll keep buying. What Douglas does is a mix of emails that alternate between value and entertainment. Find out how and why.

19:50 – Time Travel Moment: If you could go back 20 years and tell yourself one thing, what would it be? Start investing in property, Doug says. Build an investment portfolio

21:35 – If you were starting over from scratch today with nothing but your experience, how would you start a business? Douglas Lim says he would start building an email list from the very start. According to him, nothing converts higher than your email list

22:32 – Start of Quickfire Questions:

22:40 – What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

22:51 – What’s one of your personal habits that you strongly believe contributes to your success?

23:05 – What’s one piece of technology or equipment that you or your business can’t live without?

23:32 – Who’s your public hero?

23:39 – What is the world missing?

24:12 – Douglas Lim leaves the audience with this: learn the value of time. Time is finite commodity. Money is important, but you can always make money. Time, you never get back. Learn how to respect it.
