To paraphrase one Ms. Gia Gunn "This is a place for (Pokémon) Legends, okay?"
This week, we're joined by our friend (and composer of our theme music) Connor Marsh (he/him) to discuss Pokémon Legends: Arceus— the latest entry in the Pokémon franchise that brings a much needed breath of fresh air to the long-running series of loveable monsters.
A prequel to Pokémon Diamond & Pearl (Laurence's favorite Pokémon entries of all time), Legends Arceus is set in the Hisui region— a land of the distant past that will one day come to be known as the Sinnoh region— where humans and Pokémon have not yet learned to cohabitate.
Abandoning the series' typical structure of hunting down 8 Gym Badges, you are instead tasked with going out into a series of open environments and compiling the region's first ever Pokédex by catching and battling Pokémon seamlessly in the game's overworld.
We discuss the game's bold new approach for the series, its various quality of life and gameplay changes, how it draws heavily from games like Breath of the Wild, Pokémon GO, and New Pokémon Snap, and we share our all of our thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly (graphics) of this delightful video game.
Also in this episode, we discuss Sony's acquisition of Bungie, the New York Times' acquisition of Wordle, and we share what other games we've been enjoying when we're not busy catching hundreds of Pokémon!
