Building your expert status
Shannon experienced many challenges on her path to building her authority and creating her personal brand. Many of which you can learn from for your own journey!
She found there weren’t many good tutorials online in the subject she cared about – infosec (information security).
But she had a lot to learn on the subject as well, so she immersed herself into everything she could. Through the process of trying to learn, and realizing that there wasn’t a lot of good info available, she figured out that other people didn’t want to learn about it because it was just too damn hard!
So she decided she could fill that void. She wants to help other generations get excited by the things she loves.
Gaining the Respect
Shannon had to fight to get respect in a male dominated industry! How did she do it?
- She kept doing it. She kept talking about what she wanted to talk about.
- She suggests remembering that people might be having a bad day when they comment negatively.
- Try to influence people in a positive way.
- She used the negativity to push herself to be better.
- She also took constructive criticism for what it’s worth, not reading something more into it.
Camera Awkwardness
She seems super comfortable, but she didn’t start out that way! Some of her tips:
- Rehearse to the mirror!
- Loosen up! Silly, but it works!
- Watch other people
