In this episode, we get lost into the absurdly surreal world of Kiju Yoshida's Heroic Purgatory from 1970. Serving as Dustin's Lynchian avant-garde counter pick to our prior film, this one covers much of the same ground, focusing and drawing inspiration from the same student revolts that served as source material for Kichiku; only everything is a whole lot weirder. Jason finds appreciation in the film's liminal nature, but weighs that against the absurdity of the film's narrative. Dustin goes off the arthouse deep end, celebrating the film's many odd aspects. But before all that, the gauntlet is hurled down as we talk AI art being used in film. And so much more!
