Protection from Cults or even controlling dysfunctional Christian leaders can be accomplished by understanding not just the words of Jesus but "Who Jesus Is" and understanding... the "kind of person" that He is. Cult leaders use the words of Jesus but "detached" them from the person and character of Jesus! Beware. The best and only context for the Words of Jesus is the person and character of Jesus. You absolutely have to know who a person is, to understand what they are saying.
Let me say it differently. The best way to "interpret" Jesus words is in the context of His good person and character. You need to study how Jesus related to people and understand His relationships to know who He is and what He is like.
This was the whole goal of the God Is Just Like Jesus Book and the whole goal of the You Tube Videos and Podcasts.
Both Jesus and the Devil (or a Pharisee) can say the same words like, "Deny yourself and follow me" but the results are as radically different as St Francis of Assisi is from Jim Jones.
