The purpose of this opening section of John’s gospel is to introduce us to another John, John the Baptist. The name “John” has deep significance. Its root meaning is “God is gracious.” John the Baptist is sent by God with an important message. That message is grounded in a fundamental truth that we often don’t recognize. That truth is that our world is totally dependent on God’s Word (Hebrews 1:3). This Word not only gives us life. It also give us light.
