The people who most reject Jesus in all of the Gospels are the Pharisees. The Pharisees emphasized a strict observance of everything in the law of Moses (the first five books of the Old Testament). They criticized all who did not follow their pattern. They want to know if John the Baptist is a legitimate representative of the faith of Israel. What authority does he have for his ministry? The irony is that Jesus is present among them and they don’t recognize him. Jesus cannot be defined by any pattern of law or regulations beyond the love of God. Jesus often is present with us in ways we don’t perceive. (Text: John 1:24-28)
