In the community of Glovertown in Northeastern Newfoundland, construction on a pulp mill began in 1921. Midway through construction, funding fell through and it was left abandoned on the outskirts of town.
Soon after came stories about a worker who was killed during construction and reports of other accidents.
Townspeople began to warn their children to stay away from the site and many still fear the ominous presence of the creature known by its glowing Red Eyes

Haunted Canada: Ghost stories and the unexplained
About 25 mins from Victoria, British Columbia is where you'll find Hatley Castle. In 1906, B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir, purchased the property. He and his wife Laura commissioned the renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room mansion in the Tudor revival style that was popular in the Edwardian period. James was often criticized as a public official, and the mansion became his escape when he retired. James and his wife Laura had 12 children. Their youngest son, Jim, was of fighting age when WWI broke out and lost his life on the RMS Lusitania when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship, and Jim’s body was never discovered. The couple was heartbroken by the death of their son and spent the majority of their days mourning him. James died shortly after Jim and ever since then, there have been claims of strange things happening in the mansion. Esther Cox, lived with her married sister Olive Teed, Olive's husband Daniel and their two young children. Her siblings also lived with them, as did Daniel's brother John Teed. The family lived in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada and between 1878 and 1879, Esther experienced unexplained knockings, bangings and rustlings in the night. She began to suffer seizures, her body visibly swelled and she was feverish and chilled just before objects in the house took flight. This is her story. A small, historic pond believed to be bottomless and located on Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada is also the final resting place for executed criminals after they were removed from the Gibbet Hill. Captured pirates and other convicted criminals were hung from a gallows on top of the hill, and the bodies were then suspended as a warning to everyone in the city and those entering by ship. It is widely believed that is how Deadman's Pond got its name. It could also have gotten its unfortunate handle as a result of the numerous drownings that have occurred there. Located on the western tip of Nova Scotia, along the Bay of Fundy is Yarmouth and a structure built in 1865 - The Yarmouth County Jail. It had 19 jail cells with iron beds and straw mattresses where prisoners would sleep with no bed sheets or pillows. It was in use by Nova Scotia Correctional Services until 2004 and was the last place Omar Roberts slept before he was hanged in 1922. He was accused and convicted of a horrific crime and is thought to wander the halls of the prison to this day. On Fredericton’s Waterloo Row you'll find a grey Victorian mansion with a bright red roof. In the 1960s the grand old mansion was converted into a men's residence for University of New Brunswick students but decades earlier it had been the home of Mae and Walter Boyce. He donated the equivalent of half a million dollars to start Fredericton’s beloved Boyce Farmers Market. The couple died in the early 50s and since then residents have experienced spooky happenings, like objects and furniture being moved around, doors opening and closing in the night, and ghostly silhouettes drifting around the house. They claimed that Boyce House's constant inhabitant is a friendly ghost that continues to care for people who live in there today. Running underneath what once was a Grand Trunk Railway line in Niagara Falls, Ontario, this structure was abandoned due to lack of funding and became a drainage tunnel so water wouldn't flood nearby farmlands. Throughout the 20th century, farmers used it to transport goods and animals safely underneath the busy railroad above. In 1983 it became the spooky location for David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel The Dead Zone. And it is all because legend says this tunnel is haunted by the ghost of a young woman whose clothing caught fire and died inside. Her screams can still be heard to this day. Located in the upscale neighbourhood of Shaughnessy this stately 20,000 square foot, 30 room home was completed in 1911 for General Alexander Duncan McRae. In the 1920s and 30s, the General and his wife, Blaunche McRae, hosted many high society parties in the house. The gatherings were famous amongst Vancouver’s social elite, especially their New Year’s Eve masquerade balls. Their guests included royalty, high ranking politicians, and high-profile businessmen and their wives. In 1942, the McRae donated Hycroft Manor to the Canadian Government, but before that his family was involved in one of the city's most mysterious unsolved cases. Some believe that the controversy surrounding The McRaes is why Hycroft Manor has easily become one of Vancouver’s most haunted mansions. New Brunswick is the location for today's destination. St. Andrews By The Sea is a quiet and quaint seaside community near the U.S border in Maine. The small town was the centre of justice, local government and professional services for Charlotte County, including the Fundy Isles. Among the picturesque homes is a a small grassy hill. That is where you’ll find the Charlotte County Gaol Provincial Historic Site. It is adjacent to the white Charlotte County Court House which is a well preserved mid-nineteenth century Maritime courthouse sits a hard granite building with a dark exterior and metal bar windows. The jail on the other hand is a cold and ominous-looking structure meant to keep people in while terrifying all who gaze upon it. It is in stark contrast to what was once the centre of community activities such as elections, fairs, parades, and official visits. It is also where from 1867 to 1957, twenty-six men were executed including Tom Roland Hutchings who it is believed still haunts the cell he once inhabited. The Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, Ontario, is Canada’s most lavish and elegant hotels. Just steps from Canadian Parliament, the granite and white Italian marble building was designed in French Renaissance and neo-Gothic style and built in 1912 for $2 million. Despite its romantic appearance, several deaths have allegedly occurred in and around the hotel, those souls seem to be trapped with the hotel and encounters, including disembodied voice singing, brushes with unseen hands, and doors opening and closing have all been experienced. Because of this the Fairmont Chateau Laurier has gained a reputation where ghosts can be encountered and when you visit you might be lucky enough to meet some of those visitors that never left. The holiday season is upon us and one questions is always present.. Have you been naughty or nice? Depending on your answer you'll either be rewarded or you'll find a much more frightening fate will be upon you, and no, it's not a lump of coal. For centuries, disobedient children in Austria and other Alpine countries have faced a truly terrifying Christmas consequence for their misbehavior — a dreaded visit from Krampus. If you've misbehaved Krampus can be heard before he can be seen which makes him even more frightening. The joyful sound of sleigh bells will be replaced by something far more sinister: the menacing clanking of rusty chains accompanied by the eerie tinkling of cowbells. So be good for goodness sake because Krampus is coming to town. Niagara On The Lake, given its history and geographic location during The War of 1812, has a couple of significant ghost stories about dead soldiers and wounded lovers in its past. William Lyon Mackenzie King was Canada's longest serving Prime Minister. He was leader of the Liberal party for 29 years and Prime Minister for a total of 22 years, and steered Canada through the Second World War, yet he had a well-kept secret. Forever a bachelor Mackenzie was a spiritualist who kept in contact with his long departed mother. He often attended two seances a week when he was in Britain, and communicated with other dead relatives, with his predecessor, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, with the late President Franklin Roosevelt, and even with Pat, his departed Irish terrier. Today, you can still encounter him and his mother should you visit Laurier House in Ottawa. The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, in southern Alberta's spectacular Crowsnest Pass, overlooks Canada's deadliest rockslide. At 4:10 a.m. on April 29, 1903. Around 44 million cubic metres/110 million tonnes (120 million short tons) of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain. Within 100 seconds the rock reached up the opposing hills, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) line and the coal mine. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents died, most of whom remain buried in the rubble. Today, you can still hear their screams. From 1835 and up until 2013, it housed some of the most dangerous criminals in Canadian history, but now it's deserted. As you walk through the metal gates, nervous laughter ripples through you. Footsteps echo through the hallway and rooms, which still have graffiti on the walls. The vaulted heart of the prison has a brick-laid ceiling which is truly remarkable. A central dome connects four cell block buildings. If the walls of the Kingston Penitentiary could talk; they would tell you of these notorious criminals and share with you the eerie history of murders, and violent riots. They would also tell you of the many spectral being still trapped inside. Rising four stories high the structure looms over the vast Prairie landscape, it’s imposing presence hinting at a darker untold tale. The beautifully constructed building is an architectural marvel with captivating stain glass windows and design features, the historic school brings you back to a time when the laughter of students and the crisp footsteps of the nuns echo throughout the hallways. While the building did serve as a convent and a school for many decades it’s the lingering spirits of the nuns and students that now wander throughout the empty corridors. Niagara Park Power Station Niagara Falls, ON - On April 1st, 1921 Annette, dress in her warm fur coat was out for a drive in her black limousine along the banks of the Niagara river when she asked her chauffeur to stop and stated that she was going to get out, go for walk and would return. The chauffeur wait by the car, but Annette never returned to her limousine. Vogue Theatre Vancouver, BC - While the Vogue theatre is known for movies and performances it seems that its the ghosts at the Vogue that continue to keep everyone entertained and scared. The theatre is believed to have two if not more ghosts wandering throughout the Vogue and is full of sightings of ghosts and three dimensional figures. Send us a text On the evening of Wednesday, October 12, 2011 - 36 year old Jolene Cotes had just finished playing in a soccer tournament with her team the Spruce Grove Saints at the Edmonton Soccer Centre West in Edmonton, Alberta. After leaving the soccer centre, Jolene stopped at a local Walmart on Stony Plain Road to pick up some items and then left the Walmart at 1040pm to drive the 15-20 minute distance to the family acreage in Parkland County, just outside the city of Edmonton. The next morning on Thursday, Oct 13th around 6 am Jolene was found by her husband outside the family home in a grassy area dead with a massive gash on her head and to this day nobody knows who murdered the mother of two. Yet in the 13 years since Jolene was murdered RCMP have said in interviews that “ they don't believe robbery was a motive and that Cote was deliberately attacked”. The unsolved murder of Jolene Cotes is still on the minds of those who new and loved her and they continue to work every day to keep Jolene’s story in the public and to bring the killer or killers to justice.
