Sympathy versus Empathy

Sympathy is when you feel bad for someone; empthy is when you climb into their skin and feel what they are feeling...

Once upon a time I was having a difficulty time with something in my life. It doesn't remember what was going on, it could have been anything. Regardless, I turned to a friend of mine- someone who I thought would be there for me in a time of need. I told him about my problem and was astounded with his response: "Everyone has problems. You need to figure it out on your own." I couldn't believe it! I felt all alone and discarded! I wanted to grab him by the collar and shout, "I NEED YOUR HELP!"

Working in healthcare puts me in contact with people who are experiencing problems. Health problems. Psychosocial problems. Emotional issues. You name it. On a daily basis people turn to me in their distress and look for support.

Now imagine if someone turns to me in a particularly difficult situation and I respond just like my friend: "Everyone has problems. You need to figure it out on your own." That would not be very good!

When someone gets sick a lot of changes take place. Of course, there is the illness itself, which can not be ignored. Health professionals come into the scene and use their skills to fix the problem.

Now imagine you are that sick person. You are lying there feeling bad, maybe scared, in pain. You need help.

Then someone comes in and begins to treat the problem. You turn to the provider and try to connect as a person. You look for that same human connection. The provider is busy caring for your wound, or checking your vitals, or injecting your IV, and really seems to know what he or she is doing. You notice that something is lacking. While you are looking for something deeper, something to go alongside that skilled task being performed, the provider doesn't even seem to flinch.

You are left scratching your head wishing that person could "feel what you are feeling."

My dear friends, this is what Healthcare Raw is all about. Its about connecting with our dear healthcare patients, showing them that there are people out there who care about their ordeals.
