In this episode I interview James Marcus, a Certified Financial Planner, entrepreneur, avid golfer and all-around great guy.

I ran into Jim at a busy gas station- I hadn't seen him in a few years- and, while our reunion was brief, he still managed to tell me about what was going on in his life. I immediately invited him onto the show.

It was a beautiful Friday morning in mid October 2015. Jim had a great weekend planned. He was going to play golf, then fly to a tennis fantasy camp in Texas. Talk about an exciting life!

Jim moved around the bedroom and, per his routine, he leaned down to kiss the sleeping Zeus, their beloved family dog.

Zeus startled when he woke and bit off Jim's nose. "He bit my nose off!"

It was a scene of chaos. Blood, paramedics, pain. Jim's life was immediately changed. His son found the severed nose and convinced the medics to bring it along to the hospital.

He was admitted for immediate reconstructive surgery, then observed for the next eleven days while they waited to see that his nose was successfully reattached. He was left with a large scab.

After a few weeks the scab fell off and he had a large grotesque hole on the side of his nose. The plastic surgeons offered him two options:

  1. "cheek flap" in which tissue is taken from the cheek. Appealing to Jim but less so for the surgeons
  2. "forehead flap" in which tissue is taken from the cheek. Appealing to the surgeons but less so for Jim

Jim opted for the 'cheek flap' and tolerated 3 surgeries.

To make a long surgery short, after he had recovered from the surgeries he still wasn't satisfied. In his mind the nose just wasn't satisfactory. Jim thought that his options were limited.

One day Jim received a call from a friend who suggested that he reach out to the plastic surgeons in Hollywood, in particlular to the TV show, "Botched." Jim was not interested. He had been through a lot and couldn't imagine being on a reality TV show. However, the friend persisted ("Do it for me!") and Jim relented. He submitted an application and began the waiting game.

Before he knew it, Jim was in California with his wife and son. Interviews, assessments, and finally surgery.

Jim's nose was last worked on a couple weeks before our interview and he reports that his nose is still sore, but healing well.

The "Reveal" will be on June 12 on a tennis court in Hollywood.

The show's airing will be held shortly thereafter and Jim plans an charitable event for family and friends in Pittsburgh. Healthcare Raw will follow these events.

What about the dog? Unfortunately, Zeus had to be put down. This added to the Marcus family's grief but was obviously necessary. The family received great support from the Animal Rescue League and they adopted a new pooch named Lulu.

Please enjoy the interview!
