The Torah teaches us that we must confess our sins AND the sins of our forefathers. We tend to focus only on our own personal sin. However, the sins of our forefathers DO impact us and affect us. There is personal sin and there is “national” sin; that is, sins of the nation of the people who follow the God of Israel. If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; nd that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26: 40-42 Nehemiah understood this principle of confessing of the sins of your people and of your forefathers. Read Nehemiah 1: 5-7 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keeps covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou may hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Nehemiah 1:5-7 Two major national sins that are in the House of Joseph/Ephraim that needs repentance: *the sin of our forefather Jeroboam, who led the Northern kingdom into rebellion and instituted golden calf worship system. *the sin of turning away from the Torah. Much of mainstream Christianity accepts Jesus/Yeshua as personal savior but does NOT follow Yeshua’s Torah.
