Three of my students just emailed me a bunch of photos. They just finished a photo shoot a couple of days ago and they were just asking me for advice of which photos to pick, which one looks good. That’s one of the things that I teach all my students in my Inner Circle members. When it comes to premium pricing, you have got to look like someone who deserves a lot of money.

Having A Powerful Image of Yourself for Personal Branding is Mandatory

That’s why one of my videos on YouTube I said, “You can’t get rich looking poor.” If you’re richer brands, if you’re Steve Jobs, that’s a different story. But for most of us, your public image is extremely critical. Your internet image is also very, very critical. Having that professional photo, having that powerful image of yourself when it comes to personal branding and high-ticket sales, absolutely mandatory.

The Importance of Having a Powerful and Professionally Taken Photo
And this is why sometimes when you ask me, “How come you spend so much money on photos and stuff?” I’ve spent thousands of dollars. Thousands of dollars on my photos. Same thing with my students. We use the same photographer that I recommend, the same photographer that took all my photos. Because a good photographer would know what’s the image and what’s your brand. What it is that you’re trying to create and how you want people to feel about you.

If you think of what we do, for most of us, in some cases we do see clients face-to-face. But on the internet, a lot of times for prospects or even clients, you may not see them face-to-face. Maybe you talk through Skype, you do a lot of consulting through that and coaching through that. Then you’re not looking at each other face-to-face.

Leave Out Photos That Do Not Help Your Image

When someone – a potential client comes across your social media and your website, they’re first impression is guess what? Your photo. That tells them awfully who you are and what you do. And so, you can have casual photos. I have that on Facebook and things like that. But you may not want photos when you’re drunk, right? Like some of that stuff, leave it out of social media. If it doesn’t facilitate or doesn’t help with your public image, then you may not want that.

So have that powerful picture taken. Sometimes, like with three of my students, it’s a full day of photo shoot and at the end of the day, they might get two or three photos. I recommend them to do that because that’s the impression that people see. So keep that in mind.

Don’t be like, “I just took a little selfie…” No, no, no, no, no, no. No. Don’t do it. Get a professional photographer. Do it in a nice setting. Do it professionally. You can use it for a long time.

Photos Need to Amplify Who You Are

Let me give you one more tip before we go. Don’t try to be somebody else that you’re not comfortable with. My students are not trying to be me. They’re not trying to be Dan. My positioning, what I do is a little bit different. I take certain photos for certain effects. So for them, it’s a little bit different. So I encourage them, I talk to them, I advise them. “That’s who you are. Let’s amplify that. Let’s make sure you communicate that through your photos so people know that’s who you are and they get a glimpse of your personality. That they get a glimpse of who you are and what you’re like. And tell them a story, because a good photo could tell a story about who you are, who this person is.”

So good photos. I think it pays itself. It’s worth the investment, it’s worth the time, it’s worth to give it some thought of how you want to use it. And that incorporate that in your social media, incorporate that with your website. It’s a powerful, powerful thing.

Getting Attention: How My Signature Red Suit Helped Me

And I’ll share a quick story with you to wrap this up. I was speaking at an event in Toronto called SociaLIGHT. I was one of the key note speakers but the headliner was Seth-toned – the marketing author who has written a number of very famous marketing books. Seth was the headliner. He spoke for probably an hour and a half, I spoke for twenty five, thirty minutes or so.

In the speech I wore my signature red suit. In the internet you’ve probably seen it – on my website, my red suit. People took a lot of photos from that event. They shared it on Twitter and social media and what’s amazing is this. And think about this again. I’m not the head liner. Seth was. Seth Godin was. But the social media share because of my suit, that’s that I looked like, I looked so different than everybody else that I got just as much shares, likes on their Facebook group, on the event’s Facebook group, on Twitter people sharing what I said. I was just as popular as Seth and I had no coverage at that time. He had all the coverage ahead at that time.

Just think about it. Photos. And those photos people can share. “Oh who is this Dan Lok guy who is wearing this red suit and all this things?”

Get Attention to Create Desire

If you want to help people, guess what is the first thing you need to do? Get attention. If you’re not getting attention, you can’t desire. You don’t create desire, there’s nothing you can do. They’re not buying from you so you can’t really help them. So the first thing you got to do is get attention. And the best way to get attention is having a kick-ass photo. Makes sense?

Until next time. Remember: change the offer, change your life.
