Frank Herbert’s famously “unfilmable” epic 1965 sci-fi novel has vexed many a mighty talent over the years, including, at one stage, Ridley Scott (who almost delivered his crack at it but went for Blade Runner instead). Then, finally, came David Lynch’s notoriously visionary-but-problematic version in 1984. Now, refusing to let scorched earth lie, Denis Villenueve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) delivers his take, packed with all the visual elegance -- and sleepy excitement -- of those two films. Fans of the novel are rallying ‘round, so why did this grandiose space opera have your good Doctors running for the nearest wormhole...?
