Homily for The 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C

This week’s gospel tells us that heaven rejoices more over one repentant sinner than over 99 virtuous men with no need for repentance. Through the parable of the prodigal son, we see that the older son is representative of these 99. Jesus is warning us of having merely the appearance of real virtue. Everybody has need of repentance.
Father Micheal Doody reflects on the ‘older son’ mentality of many Catholics today, who try to tick all the boxes of being a good Catholic but don’t frequent the sacrament of reconciliation and can’t understand the boundless mercy of the Father. When we truly encounter the person of Jesus Christ, the Father makes sense, and we realise our need of his mercy.
