“Turn the other cheek” might just be one of Jesus’ most difficult sayings. Does he really mean that when others mistreat us, we should allow them to continue? On the contrary! This sermon delves into the context behind this passage and the surprising dignity it offers us as God’s children, made in God’s image. We are not being asked to allow others to degrade, harm, or minimize us but instead being shown how to affirm our worth—and theirs. Turning the other cheek means proclaiming the kingdom of God where all of us—you, me, and the people we like the least—are worth dying for.
