New York State’s climate law , the CLCPA, set a goal of installing six gigawatts of distributed rooftop and community solar energy generation by 2025. New York achieved the 6 GW goal in 2024 - one year ahead of schedule and $421 million under budget! While the state decided to expand distributed solar goal to 10 GW by 2030, the state’s Public Services Commission decided to reallocate $271 million - two-thirds of the projected surplus - to other programs. Solar companies and climate advocates held a rally at the Capitol on May 28 to support Senator Harckham’s Accelerate Solar for Affordable Power ("ASAP") Act which will reverse the PSC decision and increase the distributed solar goal to 20 gigawatts by 2035, and enact utility interconnection reforms to lower costs. We hear from Sen. Harckham, Michael Richardson of Third Act Upstate NY; Noah Ginsberg of the NY Solar Energy Industries Association, and from two workers from the solar industry. What do church bells, iron stoves, rototillers, tractors, horseshoes, pianos, nurses' uniforms, and . . detachable shirt collars?. . . all have in common? These were all produced at some point in Troy, NY. The nonprofit Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway has a collection of these items and so much more in their Burden Iron Works Museum in South Troy. Susan Ouellette, the Gateway's Executive Director, talks about how she has organized a large collection of stuff to create a narrative of how the objects connected to each other and to the history of the area. She also notes how sibling rivalry resulted in two Meneely bell factories across the river from each other. The organization's archives -- including ledgers, advertising, and much more from the 19th and 20th century industries in Troy -- have even attracted a novelist researching the times. Susan invites folks to visit the museum, and to support the Gateway as members and volunteers. For more info, visit hudsonmohawkgateway.org. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.…

Learn about the industrial and labor history of 19th-century Troy in this introduction to the Burden Iron Works Museum. Susan Ouellette, Executive Director, talks about how entrepreneurs in Troy developed a machine for creating horseshoes that won them a no-bid contract to make shoes for the six million (!) horses and mules in the Union Army during the 1860's. She also highlights the importance of capturing the labor history of South Troy, including the efforts of people who worked at the Burden Ironworks (which smelted the iron ore) and the Mahoney Iron Works (which fabricated that iron into decorative wrought iron railings and other architectural details). Susan explains how local activists formed the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway to purchase the then-decrepit administrative building of the Burden Iron Company. The renovated museum is now open for tours. Also hear about a descendant of the Burdens who will be coming to Troy to talk about her work as the first woman ferrier to put shoes on horses at major race tracks.
