Hereditary (2018) changed the horror movie landscape, FOREVER. Ari Aster's atomic bomb of an explosion onto the scene changed moviegoers experience from that point forward- and we couldn't be more thankful. Hereditary immediately etched its way onto the horror film Rushmore, and with Beau is Afraid coming out this Friday 4/21/23, we wanted to revisit Ari Aster's theatrical releases prior to his next banger!
*warning, we didn't have our normal high quality audio capabilities and had to actually do this episode remote due to life, please bear (Midsommar pun) with us and forgive us this one time- next episode is right back to in-person and quality sound you've come to expect! BUT, we do have a video portion on the Youtube channel for this episode! *
Hereditary marks a moment in your life, previewing of this suffocatingly haunting film, and post. Spoilers ensure, so please listen (or watch on I Watch More Movies Than You on Youtube) to this episode after watching, nay, experiencing Hereditary (2018). A family that goes through the tribulations of Job, yet with a sinister force at play in the background, gives Ari Aster the perfect playground to launch is incredibly promising career and craft one of the scariest modern horror films. Come deep dive with us!
Up next, thought you were safe in the sunlight!? Not in the summer of 2019, enter Ari Aster's Midsommar (2019). Ari Aster wasted no time at all with starting the production of this film the same week Hereditary was to go to wide theatrical release, and there must be something to his can't stop worth ethic and creative process because he dropped another banger on us in the form of this gothic Scandinavian fairy tale! Florence Pugh's breakout performance, Ari's incredible writing, and the haunting score of The Haxan Cloak create a trip (ambiguous in a sense) to Sweden you won't sure forget. Come on a beautifully lit, colorful, unforgettable journey throughout Northern Europe and visit an unforgettable Swedish mid-summer festival and the eclectic cult that throws it! Be warned, you may not make it out alive.
Ari Aster is film fan's dream. A powerfully creative force behind the camera that will take you on trips you have never been on, show you shots, sets, and situations you've never experienced, and then he'll let go of your hand as you get lost in worlds that terrify you... yet you won't turn around. And with Beau is Afraid already drumming up controversy for being too weird, there has never been a better time to discuss Ari Aster and GET HYPED FOR BEAU! Hereditary is a force of nature, and Midsommar is right there with it, come with us as we journey through them both and figure out what Ari was getting at, and what makes these films so darn unforgettable that they were almost immediately apart of the genre film zeitgeist.
