The subject of this episode isn't going away. It keeps evolving day by day, week by week, mile by mile and kilometre by kilometre. It's the autonomous vehicle, also known as the self-driving car. If fully autonomous vehicles actually come to pass, it may be a technological shift on par with the development of the smart phone, which has revolutionized communications. At their theoretical best, autonomous vehicles will kill and injure fewer people. About 32,000 people a year die on roads in the United States alone, and almost another 2,000 in Canada. But with a self-driving car, human failings will be taken out of the equation.

Today, we check in with the only Canadian academic institution that's developing an autonomous vehicle. Ross McKenzie is Managing Director of The Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research.
