This is Episode 24 of the In Seezyn Podcast. This episode is all about the process. We talk with David Riley Jr, co-host of The Fall Podcast.
Our focus today is on post season scouting, and scouting throughout the summer to improve your effectiveness in the fall. Managing work, family and the passion for the outdoors.
David shares how he adjusting to a mobile hunting strategy in 2012 to target the top 1% of bucks in his area, loving the process that goes into getting on big deer, not just the harvest. From e-scouting, post season scouting, scouting year-round, and uncovering as much information as possible.
We talk about using historical trail camera data to use past patterns to determine future opportunity not in that same season, but for future years. Combining scouting and historical camera data to identify the 2-week window when things might heat up.
David's post season scouting focuses on edge, edge, edge, not field edges but any type of edge, swamp to timber, an area where different types of habitat come together, somewhere the habitat changes and where multiple things come together.
He gives specifics about the direct correlation to how much scouting you do throughout the year and the consistency of getting on mature deer. Prioritizing post season scouting before greenup changes the landscape. Prepping camera sights, creating mock scrapes, identifying seasonal bedding, changing vegetation lines, and picking up on new blow downs that will impact how deer travel. Having a plan ahead of time, before you ever leave the truck, focusing on Edge and transitions.
