Wonder Woman Graphic Novel Info:
Ben’s summer reading list.
Excited about the Wonder Woman trailer? Want to know where this badass Diana that seems nothing like the cheesy 70s Lynda Carter version came from? DC is releasing full color graphic novel collections of the best runs of Wonder Woman for cheap.
First is George Perez’s 1986 reboot of the character and her mythology. Perez’s Diana is our modern Diana: serious, Feminist, straight out of Greek mythology.

$17, 350 pages (first 14 issues), out Aug 23
Next is Mike Deodato and William Messner-Loebs essential run from the 90’s, including “The Contest” that introduces Artemis of the Bana-Mighdall. Oooooh, Artemis. She challenges Diana about everything. She thinks Diana’s empathy has made her weak. She thinks Diana’s time in “The patriarch’s world” has corrupted her. And she thinks Diana has done this whole Wonder Woman thing all wrong. And then Artemis is actually given the mantle of Wonder Woman and gets to try things her way, which makes Diana (and us) reexamine her mission.

$15, 14 issues, came out in May
Finally, the first part of Greg Rucka’s early 2000s run on Wonder Woman. He’s by far the best writer who’s worked on the character. AND he just took over the book again! Although lots of people liked Azzarello’s new 52 Wonder Woman, I absolutely hated it. The stories were okay, but the character herself was just WRONG. Rucka gets who Diana is, why she does what she does, and can still tell these epic, action-y stories that are character-driven. There are so many stories here that became classics. “The Hiketeia” is in this book, where Diana’s granting asylum to a young girl that Batman is hunting results in them fighting each other. As is Diana’s fairly epic battle with Medusa.
