29: Daddy Krampus (Christmas Episode)
Manage episode 391460408 series 3486385
You may know of jolly, old St. Nick and the wonderful toys and gifts he bestows on all of those who are good all year round on the night of Christmas Eve. But do you know what happens to all of the not-so-nice children who deserve coal in their stockings??
Krampus is a figure from Central European folklore, particularly associated with Christmas traditions in Alpine regions. Often depicted as a horned, demonic creature, Krampus is believed to accompany St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) during the holiday season. While St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts, Krampus is said to punish misbehaving children, acting as a contrast to the benevolent saint.
Krampus is known for carrying chains, bells, and a bundle of birch branches to swat naughty children. Some tales even describe him dragging misbehaving kids away in a sack to his lair, serving as a warning to encourage good behavior. In recent years, Krampus has gained popularity beyond its traditional folklore, becoming a symbol associated with darker or alternative Christmas celebrations, often featured in parades, festivals, and even movies as a contrast to the typically jolly and cheerful holiday spirit.
Christmas is here, and the Insomniacs team is here to bring you all of the creepy stories surrounding the folklore of Krampus, as well as some other spooky holiday legends from around the world. Pull out your cozy blanket, make some hot cocoa, and listen to these unnerving tales that will have you wondering if you've been good this year.
