ガソリンと同じ成分を体内で作る植物プランクトンを海洋研究開発機構の研究グループが北極海で発見し、新たなバイオ燃料の開発につなげられないか注目されています。
海洋研究開発機構の研究船「みらい」が8年前（2013年）に北極海で行った調査で、採取した植物プランクトンを培養して詳しく調べたところ、体内にガソリンやディーゼル燃料と同じ成分を作り出して蓄える藻類を発見したということです。
これまで特定の油の成分を作るものは知られていましたが、ガソリンやディーゼル燃料と同じ成分を蓄える植物プランクトンが報告されたのは初めてだとしています。
体内に蓄えられている量はわずかだということですが、量を増やす改良などをして、新たなバイオ燃料の開発につなげられないか注目されています。
