自動車メーカーのホンダが、宇宙空間で水から酸素や水素をつくり、電源などとして活用するシステムの研究開発をJAXA＝宇宙航空研究開発機構とともに進めることになりました。
発表によりますと、ホンダとJAXAは、宇宙空間での生活に必要な水や酸素、電力を地球から調達せず、宇宙にいながら作り出すシステムの開発に向けて共同研究をします。
具体的には、太陽光発電で水を分解して酸素と水素をつくり、さらに燃料電池の技術でふたつを反応させて電力にしたり、この過程で出てきた水を再び利用したりする循環型の仕組みで、そこから生み出された水や酸素、電力は、宇宙空間の有人施設や車両の電源として使うことを想定しています。
今年度中に試作用のシステムをつくり、温度や放射線量など地球と異なる環境のもとでもシステムが正常に機能するか検証することにしています。
エンジニアは「宇宙でも水、酸素、水素を循環させる持続可能なエネルギーを供給できると考えている。ゆくゆくは地上のエネルギーシステムにもフィードバックしたい」と話していました。
