Jodie: Okay, what has been most unexpected, or surprising about being a parent and parenting?

Interviewee: Initially it was losing all that time that I had to myself. Then the most unexpected thing was how that eventually comes back to you when you, I guess, get used to it, do things a little bit differently. Eventually it all sort of comes back around, and you then you sort of get back to having the time that you used to have. You just have to do things in a different way.

Jodie: How do you do that? Can you give me an example?

Interviewee: An example is I used to go bike riding whenever I like. I love my cycling. Now I just get up early and I do it in the morning, so I can get it done, and it’s done before everybody gets out of bed. I feel better for it. The house is better for it, because I’m a happier person.

Jodie: Yeah, cool. Can you describe one of your worst parenting moments?

Interviewee: I would honestly say it was yesterday morning when I had to get my daughter to school and we’re running late because I needed to get there. She was trying to start to find her stuff for ballet. She couldn’t find one of her shoes. She lost one of her shoes. We’d just been having a discussion about the amount of money, I guess, we’ve been forking out for dance, and ballet, and school, and everything that kids do. It’s great that they do all that sort of stuff, and I don’t begrudge it at all.

It was a discussion that I’d had with my partner that morning, and now we’ve lost a dance shoe, which we then have to go and buy again. The timing was impeccable, and I just lost it. I was swearing. I got to school myself and I started thinking about it, and I really wanted to get out and see my daughter, just to say “How are you going?’. I knew she had something on at school today, or yesterday that she needed to do, and she wanted to do it really well. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have been feeling too good about it. I felt pretty bad yesterday.

Jodie: How did you get over that? How did you deal with that?

Interviewee: It was really when I went and picked up her from school. I just sort of said, “How was your day?’ I asked her questions about her day, how was it. I didn’t revisit it, because I didn’t sort of think it needed to be done. I just sort of found out how her day went, what she had to do at school, how that went. Just start talking again.

Jodie: Just reconnecting with her.

Interviewee: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jodie: What’s an idea, or word, or insight or something that really helps you in your parenting?

Interviewee: What helps me in my parenting? I think just accepting that things aren’t always going to be the way you planned them. You’ve just got to go with it a bit, and relax. Plans change, and just don’t think that just because you want something to go in a certain way, it’s going to go that way, because inevitably it’s probably not. If you accept that, I think it’s a lot easier for you.
