Kim is a second grade teacher and mom to two children. When her eldest was struggling with learning to read, she was reminded of a past student with similar challenges, and decided to look deeper into what was the cause of, and solution to, her problem. Today, she has helped identify visual issues in many of her students, and has learned how to adapt the classroom environment for their and all students’ success.

Takeaways from today’s episode:

-Teachers are not trained to identify the “red flags” of when vision may be impeding student learning, but most are open to interventions that help their students succeed

-School screenings may not be required by law to screen every child in every grade, and often miss the most common visual issues that impact learning

-The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated many childrens’ visual issues and created new challenges in teaching, reading, learning, and the classroom as a whole

-The kinds of reading errors your child makes matter- some are more indicative of a visual issue than others
