This week we had flooding that went under our floors and seeped into our walls. A crew came out and placed huge utility fans all throughout the basement and turned them on. It’s so loud, I actually thought it couldn’t be happening. I was upstairs in my kitchen and felt like I was guiding a Boeing 757 to its terminal without head gear.
Then, the very polite leader of the crew told me the fans needed to stay on until they returned Monday.
Monday, was um, 4 days away.
Unless we were locked away in a bedroom, none of us could hear each other in the house. Our minds would adapt to the noise, but our bodies felt the burden of it. It was a sense you were under something you couldn’t get over. The crew leader texted me a time for Monday and I jumped on the opportunity to beg.
“Um, I realize this is for our good - but the fans have really exhausted us. If I have to yell “What?!” one more time to someone in my family - I think we’re all gonna lose it.”
Thankfully, he said we could shut some of them off, but to turn them back on at night. I fled downstairs and started unplugging like a maniac.
The oppressive noise lifted.
We were free.
Obviously this is a silly example, but think about the last time a fire alarm went off and it took awhile for the fire station to shut off the alarms. Once they did it’s like you could breathe again - your shoulders could relax.
It was over.
Bondage has that same weight over us. We may “get used to it” - not even notice it anymore - but our body is still burdened by it’s oppressive weight. Think feelings of shame, anger or guilt - we may think we want justice, or a new life, or a do-over that will never come.
What we really want is to be free.
And Jesus says we are.
