God has been working on Jacob. He is not the same man that he was when he left home twenty years ago. He demonstrates humility, love for others, and even repentance as God prepares him for a confrontation. God is backing Jacob against the wall so he will have nothing but God to trust in, and this will culminate in God coming to Jacob himself - and changing him.
