Barry first found music when he borrowed his sister's record collection when he was about eight and was hooked. When Caroline started it was a new beginning, and he listened to all the stations, but Caroline was his favourite by far. Later he became a singer in a band, then started doing discos when he was 18. By the middle 1940's he lived in the Los Angeles area and was playing up and down the coast with a dixieland band that took its cue from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (his first great influence). Before he became a national act through his recordings for Capitol, McHargue did sessions for many small labels, including Jump.
