Douglas Derrick is my friend from Portland, OR and he finished the Oregon Cascades 100. He's the guest on Ep. 355 of the Jon of All Trades Podcast, debuting October 4, 2023.
Douglas Derrick is my friend from Portland, OR and he finished the Oregon Cascades 100. He’s the guest on Ep. 355 of the Jon of All Trades Podcast, debuting October 4, 2023. No idea what happened when I tried to get that screengrab.

Douglas Derrick is one of the coolest guys I know. He’s the inspiration for Negroni Week, which just happened. He has a Portlandia sketch that parodies his mixology chops from his time as a bartender. He’s a champion angler. Above all that, he’s just really fun to hang out with when I go to Portland and knows all the most killer spots to eat, drink, and hang out.

We could’ve spent a month of Sundays talking about all of that, but the reason he’s on the show this week is to tell me about his experience running – and COMPLETING! – the Oregon Cascades 100 race. I’ve never run 100 miles, and almost certainly will, so I was curious what the experience was like. Doug and I dig into his motivation for doing this, his training, spend a long time talking about the ups and downs of the race itself, and then talk about the aftermath. How was his body? What would he have done differently? Would he do it again? It’s a long episode, but it FLIES by because this is fascinating stuff.

One of Doug’s inspirations for this was to support an organization in honor of one of his fallen friends, so please check out and support The Dustin and Kristen Yoder Memorial Foundation. You can also keep up with Douglas on his Instagram page.
