Exactly when (and more importantly, why) did we start trying to make scripture fit with evolutionary theory?

On this episode of 24/6, Mark James from Creation Ministries International (www.creation.com) and Rob talk about the theory of uniformitarianism, which states that everything has always happened at the same speed we observe it happening today and for this reason the earth is 4.5 billion years old. The only problem is, what we observe today (real, observable science) doesn't fit with that theory.
