2017 Peter H. Raven Lecture Series - Andrea Wulf
Quarryhill Botanical Gardens
Friday, October 13th, 2017 @ 5:30 pm
The Peter H. Raven Lecture Series concludes its 2017 season with historian and celebrated author Andrea Wulf, who will discuss her New York Times bestseller, “The Invention of Nature: Alexander Von Humboldt’s New World.” As noted in the New York Times Sunday Book Review: “Wulf does much to revive our appreciation of this ecological visionary through her lively, impressively researched account of his travels and exploits reminding us of the lasting influence of his primary insight: that the Earth is a single, inter-connected organism, one that can be catastrophically damaged by our own destructive actions.”
Ms. Wulf trained at the Royal College of Art in London and is an acclaimed writer who has written for the Guardian, Sunday Times, Financial Times, and Los Angeles Times. She also provides book reviews for the New York Times Sunday Book Review and the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Wulf is the author of “The Brother Gardeners,” “Chasing Venus” and “Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation,” and co-author of “This Other Eden.” She has lectured across the world—from the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society in London to Monticello and the New York Public Library in the United States. Ms. Wulf is a three-time fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello and the Eccles British Library Writer in Residence 2013. She's a member of PEN American Center, an International Fellow of the Explorer's Club, a member of The Society of Woman Geographers, a Fellow of the Linnean Society and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
