Some industries have a reputation for being traditional, slow-paced, or behind the times. Sometimes, that reputation is well earned, sometimes it’s an unfair generalisation. And either way there’s always companies and leaders who break the mold, like this week's guest: Mike Kaeding, CEO of Norhart.

We discuss his experiences in the construction industry, from growing up in a family business, then joining and taking it over at a young age, to adopting a modern leadership and management approach that’s fairly unique and pretty revolutionary for the industry. I found it super interesting and ground-breaking (pun intended) to hear Mike talk about the work Norhart is doing, their production-line idea, their two week hiring process, unlimited paid time off, flexible working and more.

We touch on various leadership theories and practices, from the traditional to servant leadership to situational/contextual approaches to why Netflix has been an example for him, and beyond. What it keeps coming back to though, is the importance of attracting and hiring the best people, and then giving them the tools, systems and flexibility to do their best work. That is the core of successful leadership for Mike, and I think he's spot on with it.

If you've ever felt stuck or demoralised by your industry, then this episode is a breath of fresh air and may just give you that inspiration you're looking for!
