(Disclaimer: We are not doctors nor medical professionals. We’re just gals who’ve been through shit. These are our thoughts!)

When we say “western medicine”—we’re referring to the SYSTEM that’s so overwhelmed, where you have to go through referrals, insurance, navigate hospitals on your own, etc.

Navigating health and pain in Western Medicine is a little confusing in this sense…we have doctors…highly-paid specialists, who we lean on and trust completely with our well-being. But it’s still a PRACTICE, and let’s be real—the system is overflowing.

What happens when you’ve received a diagnosis and don’t know where to begin? What if test after test happens and you…

  • are not getting any answers,
  • paying a ton of money that you don’t have,
  • fighting with insurance and being gaslit only to find yourself still in pain with no solutions and being told that “we don’t see anything”
  • What if all your tests are normal?!
  • How to find hope and push through?!

Our thoughts:

  1. TAKE COPIOUS NOTES with dates (the more detailed the better!!) Record—every conversation with every doctor, what they’ve said, what medication(s) they recommended, what you tried, how it affected you, what you’re eating around those meds, what are your symptoms on a daily basis?
  2. You can get emotional talking to your doctor—notes can help! Give them the facts.
  3. Doctors and nurses are so overwhelmed—they can’t remember everything on your chart—make sure when they walk in you remind them of important info.
  4. If you’re too weak to type…try Voice Record on your phone, worst case scenario, to keep your notes.
  5. Keeping a food diary makes it easy to see in black & white where allergies may be coming from. (Read those labels! )
  6. If you get bad news and need to process, try your best to give yourself a time period to be upset—and decide when to put a cap on it, and move forward. (“I’ll give myself this weekend to be upset, and Monday I’ll dive back into making appointments.”)

If you want to go directly to a blood lab for testing and pay direct, maybe research options like these labs:
