Nicolas ColeDo you compare yourself to others? We all do it, but sometimes your greatest personal challenges are often your best opportunities for growth.

That was the case for Nicolas Cole. He spent much of his childhood sick from Celiac disease that wasn t diagnosed until he was 18.

By his own description, he was scrawny, had no friends and spent much of his time alone playing online games. He became such a good gamer that by the age of 17 he was one of the highest ranking World of Warcraft players in the world. He even started one of the first gaming blogs.

Little did he know that all that time spent playing games would one day enable him to become a weightlifter, fitness model, author and entrepreneur.

He says gaming taught him important life skills that enabled him to achieve success in other areas of his life like . . .

  • Personal branding.
  • Building teams.
  • Dealing with conflict.
  • Goal setting.

I think the most important lesson you can learn from Nicolas is competing against yourself can be far more rewarding than by comparing yourself against the success of others.

He recently published his first book, Confessions of a Teenage Gamer, in which he reflects on his life as a gamer and how it laid the foundation for his success.

Inspirational Quotes

“I’m one-half entrepreneur and one-half artist.”

“I see all of digital marketing as gaming.”

“For me the whole journey has never been a question of ambition or drive, it’s actually been being able to slow down and appreciate all the little steps along the way.”

“It’s daily habits that create the results.”

Coaching Advice

Do you struggle between doing what you think your are “suppose to do” and what you really “want to do”?

When I asked Nicolas to share his advice for anyone feeling stuck between those two choices, he told me, “Isn’t the answer obvious?”

Here’s his advice on how to gain more confidence in your authentic voice . . .

1) Start doing the work you want to do. Experiment in private and don’t wait for permission to do the work you really want to create.

2) Answer questions. Ask yourself questions and have others ask you questions about the work you want to do. Questions have the power of prompting your natural voice. Listen to it!
