Abe MatamorosDo you have an idea for a product or device, but have no idea how you would ever go about creating a prototype?

You gotta listen to Abe Matamoros, founder of EllieGrid, a healthcare accessory device to help remind people when to take their medication.

He came up with the idea when you discovered his grandfather sick in bed because he forgot to take one of his medications.

He immediately became enthralled with the problem of medication noncompliance. Medicine can be life saving, but only if you create the habit of taking it! That’s the problem Abe wanted to solve.

With only a passion for design, but with no experience he said he’s developed a healthcare device to empower people to change their habits.

A few lessons from our conversations include:

  • The process of how he was able to build his prototype with no design experience.
  • His strategy for his first crowd funding campaign. (BTW since this interview was recorded, he’s far exceeded his $40,000 goal!)
  • Why focusing on fewer priorities has made him more productive.

Life Skills That Matter In This Episode

  • Self-directed learning.
  • Building community.
  • Simplifying.

How Abe Works and Thinks

  • Wake up time: It varies depending on his work schedule.
  • Ideal work environment: He would love to work in an office and not at his house, so he can collaborate with his team more easily.
  • Definition of success: Empower people.
  • Wants to meet: Founder of Fitbit
  • Regains focus by: Thinking of his grandfather.
  • Favorite productivity tool: slack
  • Unproductive habit: Surfing the web just before bed.
  • 90-day goal: Get 30% of his crowd funding pre-sold on IndieGoGo in first 3 days and then exceed his crowdfunding goal of $40,000. He also wants to finalize his prototype and to start raising his seed round of capital.

Inspirational Quotes

“I feel like I’m living a fulfilled life if I can create a product that can help people.”

“Staying focus on just a few things has helped me forward more quickly.”

Coaching Advice

Is there a skill you lack that is preventing you from executing on your big idea? Abe offers the following advice on how to overcome that obstacle:

1) Start with your strengths. You may lack a specific skill, but your unique combination of skills might provide you with new insights or a different approach to solving the problem you want to solve.

2) Validate your idea. You don’t need any new skills to ask lots and lots of people about whether or not they are interested in using your solution.

The secret to validating your idea is to first listen to the struggles of your target customers to challenge your assumptions. Abe asked his target customers to provide criticism of his idea and not just compliments.

Your conversations may validate or refute your idea, but you might also come up with new and better ideas!
