Jeroboam leads the 10 tribes in the North, under the banner of Israel, while Rehoboam leads the two tribes in the South, under the banner of Judah.

The chapter is also split – between what is happening in the north, followed by what is happening in the south.

In the north, a couple of chapters previously the prophet Ahijah has previously warned Jeroboam, but Jeroboam doesn’t heed the warning and decides to do his own thing. But in chapter 14, his son becomes ill, and suddenly he wants to hear from the prophet again. However, instead of going himself, he sends his wife.

  • Why? He takes the cowards way out – how often are we more concerned with our own self-protection, rather than doing as God has given us to do?
  • He also tells his wife to disguise herself – who is he trying to deceive? He tries to manipulate God’s power to suit himself.
  • God had already told Ahijah what to expect – he was blind, but he hadn’t disqualified himself from doing what God had given him to do.

Meanwhile in the south Rehoboam was King.

  • But his kingdom just blended in with the rest of the world – how often do we do that? Are we willing to stand out?
  • Rehoboam seems to end up making a cheap replacement of what God has actually asked of him – are there areas in our lives where we have a tendency to do the same?

This podcast is part of a series on the books of Kings which is supported by periodic ‘reflections’, which consider questions which have been submitted by members of LifeLine Church.
