Ep. 8: “Almost Hollywood, Nearly New Orleans”

This episode of “Light Talk” we are joined by Vicki Mayer, a professor of Communication at Tulane University. Professor Mayer recently published her work, Almost Hollywood, Nearly New Orleans: The Lure of the Local Film Economy and has made it available for free digital download. Professor Mayer joined us at inDEPTH Media to discuss New Orleans’s film history, the current (and possibly once again changing) film tax credits in Louisiana, and the socio-cultural impact they have had on our communities. Though at times critical of how the credits were implemented, Mayer emphasizes the undeniable connection New Orleans has to film throughout its history – even as far back as the silent film era. Come join us as we discuss the complexities, challenges, and benefits, of growing creative industries!

Check out “Talking Life and Culture in New Orleans,” ViaNolaVie. This is a very cool digital media project Professor Mayer has been coordinating with NolaVie and many others.
