Leton James was born on the south side of Chicago, Illinois and has lived in the Roseland area since he was born with his parents and four siblings. He has performed shows across the city of Chicago at What’s Up; Joe River Center; Double Door; Tini Martini Bar and many others. He attended Chicago Public Schools and graduated from Chicago Vocational Career Academy. Throughout his childhood he faced many obstacles and had a difficult time being the youngest of five. Gunna enjoyed elementary school however; trouble began to follow him at an early age. He felt that life wasn’t fair sometimes. Gunna was exposed to a lot of things especially by his older brothers and began to hang in the streets to see what all the excitement was about. Gunna was very curious to try to make street life his life. He began to hang out and started getting involved with destructive individuals. Gunna thought this was good for a while but after a while he soon found out that he was on a road to destruction. He was very rebellious towards his parents and others that had his best interest, most importantly his mother. The visions his family had for his life weren’t the same for the young artist at that moment, but he soon found out the hard way that they were right.

Everything was revealed in time. “The walls began to close in” and Gunna felt trapped and didn’t know what to do. At that moment in his life he knew that God was disappointed in him and that hurt. He had too many loses and not enough wins. “Sometimes you are put in situations and driven to a point of no return but I refused to be a void, I was determined to take back what was taken from me, my life.” On his path to change he was faced with negativity that wanted to keep him enclosed but he had the strength and knowledge to walk away from it all. Gunna’s inner strength drew him closer to family and he began to repair those relationships. So the artist began involving himself around positive influences. He turned to music to obligate his time from negativity. He has a passion for music and loves being a creator. “Music is the mirror to my inner soul.” He has overcome many challenges in his life and as a young man he has many more to overcome, however he is on the right path and will continue to achieve greatness along the way. Gunna feels that his music can inspire millions across the world stamping his name in the music industry.
