East Cobb Whataburger Zoning Case Delayed Until June

Whataburger is set to return to the Cobb Board of Commissioners next month to seek approval for its new east Cobb restaurant. The San Antonio-based fast food chain had requested a delay in its hearing before Tuesday’s zoning meeting. According to County Zoning Manager John Pederson, Whataburger is still collaborating with local residents on the proposed building’s design.

The plan involves constructing a new 7,000-square-foot facility at 3550 Sandy Plains Road, within a shopping center anchored by Target, replacing a now-closed O’Charley’s. However, this proposal challenges existing restrictions from a 1999 settlement that bans fast-food restaurants and drive-thru services at that location.

Whataburger’s site plan includes a two-lane drive-thru, which is a key point of contention. Notably, the chain is not seeking a rezoning, as the property already allows for restaurant use. Instead, they need approval for their specific site plan modifications.

Currently, there are other Whataburger locations in Cobb, including two in Kennesaw, with another recently approved in Acworth
