By the evening of March 12, Ukrainian forces had repelled eight Russian assaults in the Kursk region in western Russia, according to Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. He said active fighting continued in the suburbs of Sudzha and its surrounding areas.
Russian forces, Syrskyi said, are attempting to push Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region and across the border into Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
He added that Russia, “determined to achieve its political objectives at any cost,” had suffered and continues to suffer “significant losses.” Syrskyi claimed that since the start of Ukraine’s operation in the Kursk region, Russian forces have lost 54,900 personnel. There is no independent confirmation of these figures.
“My top priority in difficult situations has always been and remains preserving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers,” Syrskyi said. “To achieve this, [Ukrainian Armed Forces’] units maneuver to more advantageous positions when necessary. [...] Despite mounting pressure from the Russian-North Korean army, we will hold the defense in the Kursk region for as long as it remains practical and necessary.”
