Wake Forest Professor Jeff Camm shares his expertise on how to manage the mountains of data and information facing farm leaders.

ABOUT OUR GUEST: Jeffrey D. Camm is the Associate Dean of Business Analytics and holds the Inmar Presidential Chair in Business Analytics at the School of Business at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Prior to joining the faculty of Wake Forest, he spent 30 years at the University of Cincinnati, where he held a number of positions including Head of the Department of Operations, Business Analytics and Information Systems at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business. He was also a Fellow of the UC Graduate School and was the founding director of the University of Cincinnati Center for Business Analytics.

Professor Camm has authored and contributed to several college textbooks on the topics of management science, business analytics and statistics. He was recently awarded the George E. Kimball Medal by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), which recognizes distinguished service to the institute and to the profession of operations research and management science. Previously. Camm previously won the INFORMS Prize for the Reaching of OR/MS Practice in 2006. That year he also won the Rainmaker Award from DC Velocity Magazine.

DEAN’S TAKEAWAYS: 1. Spend time on the problem—defi ning it and working to solve it. It’s easy to get caught up and describe the symptoms of the problem rather than the problem itself. Dig in and ask the follow-up questions. Find out what the real problem is that you’re dealing with. 2. The data itself isn’t enough. You have to bring in common sense and address the problem at hand. Don’t get stranded in the snow by following your GPS into a blizzard and not being able to use common sense to fi nd your way out.

We always welcome your feedback at Modern Farm Business Podcast. Do you have suggestions for future episodes, or questions on something we’ve already covered? Drop Dean a line at dean@modernfarmbusiness.com. He’ll look at each email personally and respond as quickly as possible.

Thanks for listening! See you next week!
