"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

Kailey Jacomet has created a law career that fits around her priorities and her lifestyle, not a life that fits around her law practice. When she first told me that, it struck me that most of us have built lives around our law practice. We fit family, fun, passions, and hobbies in the margins around our demanding careers. But, how do you create the life and law career that you actually want? Kailey knew from a young age that she wanted to be a lawyer and she wanted to be a mom. Reconciling how she could do both took creativity and courage. As a mom of two, Kailey now has a thriving IP solo practice and coaching business. She works part time and is able to be present for her family in a way that feels aligned with her priorities and values. In this episode, Kailey shares her journey on making the leap from government litigation to solo practice and innovative strategies for marketing and business development that have contributed to her firm's success. Kailey is on a mission to help other women lawyers create a life and law practice that actually work for them. From Oct. 4-8, 2021 , she is offering a free interactive training to help you learn how to lawyer on your own terms . Before meeting Randi, I had never known you could seek support from an advocate at the end of your life in the same way you do while giving birth. Birth doulas are more commonly known, but there are professionals who train to serve people who are dying. Randi Johnson took an unconventional path away from the practice of law and law firm ownership to follow her passion to do this work. She chose fulfilling her true calling over the practice of law. In this episode, we dive into a thought-provoking discussion about honoring what you feel called to do, making that a priority, and finding the courage to go for it.
