I was riding home from elementary school on my bike one day, when a classmate asked me for a ride. I pulled over and he sat sideways on the crossbars as I resumed peddling. I turned on to Oakmont Avenue, when all of a sudden I was literally flying. I enjoyed the feeling for a nanosecond, until I realized my bike was no longer with me. My landing removed freckles from my body. I sat up, turned around, and saw Charlie and my bike. In fact, he was wearing it. I ran over to my buddy and noticed that one of his arms looked like a map of Florida. An ambulance took Charlie to a hospital, and I slowly walked my bike home, wondering what had happened.
My mom called Charlie's mom and kept up with his progress. Charlie returned to school with a brand new white cast, but something happened among my classmates. I heard kids saying, “Did you hear that Timmy broke Charlie’s arm?” Some of my friends would sign Charlies cast and glance over at me. I was an outcast until his cast came off.
Months later, I was at Charlies house and he said, “I know why we wrecked.” He added, “I started swinging my legs while you were pedaling, all of a sudden my heel went into the spokes of the front wheel and stopped us. It was my fault.” Wow! Mystery solved.
Sometimes we have shame and guilt when we are innocent but, guilty or not, the feeling of being an outcast is awful. However the guiltless One, Jesus, took all of our shame to the cross, and we can become a new creation in Christ, and that is good news we all can share!
