It seems like only yesterday that my four-year-old daughter, Gabrielle, asked me to teach her
how to make a rock jump across the water. I was just thankful she didn't ask me to explain
quantum physics or something even harder, like setting an alarm clock in a hotel room.
We headed to the river in my jeep, and I told her about the importance of finding just the right
rocks. We started searching for smooth rocks that were fairly flat on one side. I showed her how
you have to pop your wrist to get the stone to spin fast and dance across the water. I recalled
the hours I spent alone as a child practicing skipping rocks. After all, patience and practice are
required for everything in life, but you can’t master anything in just one day.
When we left, I suggested we go get some dessert, so I drove to the ice cream shop to enjoy a
messy chocolate treat. The waitress asked Gabrielle if she was having a good day and she
said, “Yes ma’am, and my daddy is a good rock skipper.” It was a banner day!
Later that evening, I thought about little David searching for five smooth stones for his sling.
Before he ever faced Goliath, he was well acquainted with the proper rocks he would need. He
had already killed a lion and a bear and was more than proficient. Yet, he still had enough rocks
to topple four more giants!
We need more prayer time with God and more preparation before we stand before our giants.
Many of us could slay more spiritual giants in our lives if we had the right spiritual stones
